Minister backs Britain for Events

Britain for Events, the annual marketing campaign aimed at promoting Britain as a world-class destination for events, has been endorsed by the Minister for Tourism and Heritage, John Penrose MP.

Said Mr Penrose, “Any campaign that showcases the excellent work done by the UK events industry should be celebrated, and I’m delighted to support Britain for Events and its mission to encourage organisers of events to buy British.”

Now in its tenth year, the Britain for Events campaign covers every aspect of the industry including live music, sport, festivals, cultural events, meetings, conferences and exhibitions. Events – whether for business or pleasure – in Britain are now worth an estimated £36 billion. Running from September 2011 to March 2012, the Britain for Events campaign is supported by the Business Visits & Events Partnership (BVEP), VisitBritain, International Confex and a far-reaching network of UK trade associations, venues, event suppliers and other stakeholders.

Explained John Penrose, “This campaign targets not just the people that create and bring events to these shores, but also the people that attend and enjoy them, that seek inspiration and learning from them; this is critical in underlining that this is a country that believes and values the power of events.”

Michael Hirst, Chair of BVEP, added: “We are delighted and honoured to have secured the Minister’s endorsement. It underlines the importance of events to the UK’s economy as well as highlighting the campaign’s credibility within the wider business community.”

New show to rival Confex

Ocean Media Group is set to launch a brand-new show to rival International Confex. To be called The UK Venue Show, the new exhibition will launch next year, being co-located with Ocean Media’s Event Production Show (formerly The Event Show) on 1 & 2 February at Olympia. The new show has already received support from some potential exhibitors, as well as the Association of Event Venues (AEV).

The UK Venue Show has cheekily booked its slot a month ahead of International Confex, organised by UBM Live, which will take place at its new venue of London ExCeL in March 2012. News of the rival event has been warmly greeted by the promotional goods market, as Confex exhibitors have traditionally been great customers for a variety of exhibition items such as carrier bags, pens and USB sticks, and new shows are always welcomed as a source of promotional marketing activity.

Commented the show’s Director, Tanya Cohen, “Running alongside the Event Production Show, staying in central London and capitalising on the increasing strength of the UK domestic market means we have an excellent USP – quite simply to give people exactly what they want and have been asking for.  We anticipate over 250 exhibitors and 5,000 visitors over two days in year one – with lots of exciting plans still to be announced.”

Ocean Media Exhibitions is a leading events organiser operating in four key areas: specialist fashion, events production, leisure and social housing. The company staged 16 events in 2010 in the UK, Holland, Germany and Poland, with its portfolio of shows supported by its magazines, websites and conferences.

Britain for Events to be run by BVEP

Responsibility for ‘Britain for Events’ – the meetings and events annual promotional campaign – has passed from Visit Britain to the Business Visits and Event Partnership (BVEP).

Britain for Events will benefit from a new advisory board consisting of key industry associations and partners. These include the Meetings Industry Association (MIA), the International Congress & Convention Association (ICCA UK & Ireland), the Hotel Booking Agents Association (HBAA) and Visit England. Visit Britain has now withdrawn from business tourism.

The funding shortfall for the next three years has been taken on by International Confex, with the remainder of the campaign funds being raised from industry partners and supporters, as well as the commercial and corporate sector. The campaign will launch in June, with a focus period of September 2011 to March 2012, and will continue to run during the summer of 2012.

Commented BVEP’s Chairman, Michael Hirst, “With Visit Britain’s strategic move away from business tourism, we are delighted that this important campaign has a secure future. There is a natural fit between the partnership and the campaign and we have a board of experienced personnel from across the industry who can aid in ensuring it continues to have a tangible and positive effect on the industry.” Mr Hirst continued, “It fits our key objectives to promote the benefits of business visits and events at all levels of government and to make Britain the natural destination choice and an international hub for all sectors of the events industry.”

Confex on the move

International Confex – the UK’s leading event for event organisers – is moving venue. Organisers UBM Live have announced that this established and successful show will move from Earls Court, where the event is due to take place in just a few weeks’ time, to Excel London for its 2012 outing. The reason given by UBM Live for the move is that it will allow the show to expand in the future.

Said Confex Director, Alison Willis, “Moving to Excel will offer us more flexibility and opportunity to grow Confex in the next few years. We want to increase the hosted buyers scheme and reach more international visitors, which will be easier due to Excel’s close links to City Airport and plans for the Crossrail link. There are also a wide range of hotels on site and good facilities for our visitor base.” Jonny Sullens, Confex Group Portfolio Director, added, “We’ve made significant investment this year in a hosted buyer programme which will see more than 350 senior decision-makers brought into the event.”

Of course, 2012 is a big year for London and hosting the show at Excel during the same year as the 2012 Olympic Games was an important factor in the decision to shift. Ms Willis also said that, although there are currently no plans to use the International Convention Centre during the 2012 show, its presence on site provides flexibility to grow in the future. She added, “We have to make sure we remain the leading event for the event industry.”

Naturally, the big cheeses at Excel were delighted. Managing Director, David Pegler, commented that Excel’s own clients – such as the corporate and association markets – form a large share of the core audience targeted by the Confex team, and that the venue will use its own marketing to raise awareness of the exhibition.

Meanwhile, Earls Court and Olympia Group Managing Director, Nigel Nathan, put on a brave face: “We are very proud of the instrumental part we’ve played in the growth and success of International Confex and look forward to seeing how the show develops in its new location.” We bet they do!

UBM will, however, continue to hold a range of events at EC&O including Energy Solutions, Total Workplace Management, M&E – The Building Services Event, Technology for Marketing, Call Centre Expo and Internet World.

The final International Confex at Earls Court will take place next month from 1 to 3 March.

UK conference and business events worth £18.8 billion

In a recent report from Eventia, the voice of the UK events industry, the value of business events and conferences to the UK economy has been estimated at a massive £18.8 billion.

Eventia – which was created in 2006 through the merger of the Corporate Events Association (CEA) and the Incentive Travel & Meetings Association (ITMA) and strengthened by the inclusion of the British Association of Conference Destinations (BACD) in 2009 – published the findings in its recent UK Events Market Trends Survey (UKEMTS). The annual UKEMTS survey is supported by major events industry organisations including Confex Group, CAT Publications, VisitBritain, Conference Centres of Excellence and MeetEngland.

This is the first time ever that UKEMTS has estimated the overall value of the conference and business events market – including spend at venues and in the wider destination by delegates and organisers – rather than simply the revenue to event venues. The report, which is based on data supplied by a representative sample of 403 venues from across the country, confirms the importance and scope of the events sector to the UK economy.

Other key estimates in the report include:

  • There were 94 million attendances at events in 2009
  • 1.32 million events took place, with an average attendance of 71 people
  • The average number events per venue was 379 in 2009, down slightly on 2008’s figure of 391
  • Hotels hosted 61% of all business events
  • 36% of events are booked only two to eight weeks in advance
  • The average duration of events in 2009 was 1.6 days, which is similar to previous years

Venues were reported to be more optimistic about business prospects than a year ago, with 65% of respondents planning to invest in their property this year and 9% spending in excess of £1 million.

Eventia has now been able to provide a robust estimate for the value of our sector, something the industry has long needed. We shall be using this figure and the other market intelligence revealed in this survey for education, marketing and advocacy purposes.”
